What it is
Peppermint oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of Mentha piperita. The scent is bright and cooling, and the cooling sensation on skin comes from menthol, its principal component.
How people use it
- Diffuser. A few drops in water — sharp and fresh, popular in a study or office.
- Steam inhalation. Two or three drops in hot water.
- Massage blends. Diluted in a carrier oil, typically 2–3 drops per 10ml.
- Temples and neck. Well diluted, after a long day at a screen.
- Around the house. Some people use it on cotton wool in cupboards for the scent.
Safety
Dilute before applying to skin — undiluted peppermint oil can irritate and the cooling effect is strong. Keep well away from eyes. Do not swallow. Not suitable for young children, and avoid during pregnancy. Patch test first.
