What activated charcoal is
Activated charcoal is carbon — usually from coconut shell or wood — processed at high temperature to open up an enormous network of tiny pores. That structure gives it a very large surface area relative to its weight, which is why it binds so readily to other substances.
It is not the same as barbecue charcoal, which is not food grade and should never be eaten.
Powder or capsules?
Powder is more versatile and better value — you can use it cosmetically as well as internally. It is also genuinely messy: fine, black, and it goes everywhere.
Capsules are cleaner and portable, but only work for internal use.
Most people who use it regularly for both purposes buy the powder for face masks and teeth, and capsules for taking out of the house.
Common uses
- Teeth whitening. Dip a wet toothbrush in the powder, brush gently, rinse thoroughly. Gently is the key word — charcoal is abrasive and daily scrubbing wears enamel. Once or twice a week is plenty.
- Face masks. Mixed with water, clay or aloe.
- Detox drinks. Half a teaspoon in water, well away from meals.
- Digestive comfort. Capsules for bloating and gas.
Important: timing around medication
Activated charcoal binds to things indiscriminately — including medication and nutrients. That is the whole mechanism.
Take it at least two hours away from any prescription medicine, supplements, or the contraceptive pill. If you take medication daily, speak to your pharmacist before adding charcoal to your routine.
Drink plenty of water alongside it, and do not take it continuously for long stretches.
Questions
Does activated charcoal whiten teeth?
It is widely used for surface stains from coffee, tea and red wine. It does not change the natural colour of the tooth. Use it gently and infrequently — it is abrasive.
Can I take it with my medication?
Not at the same time. Leave at least two hours either side, and check with your pharmacist first.
Is this food grade?
Yes. Do not substitute barbecue or garden charcoal — those are not safe to consume.
Do you deliver nationwide?
Yes, all nine provinces. Free over R500, 1–2 business days to major centres.
