What it is

Activated charcoal is carbon — usually from coconut shell or wood — processed at high temperature to open up a network of tiny pores. That structure gives it a very large surface area relative to its weight, which is why it binds readily to other substances.

It is not the same as barbecue charcoal, which is not food grade and should never be eaten.

Common uses

• Teeth. Dip a wet toothbrush, brush gently, rinse well. Gently is the key word — charcoal is abrasive, so once or twice a week rather than daily.
• Face masks. Mixed with water, clay or aloe.
• Drinks. Half a teaspoon in water, away from meals.

Important: timing around medication

Activated charcoal binds indiscriminately, including to medication and nutrients — that is the whole mechanism. Take it at least two hours away from any prescription medicine, supplement or the contraceptive pill. If you take daily medication, speak to your pharmacist first.
