What turmeric is
Turmeric is the root of Curcuma longa, a relative of ginger, dried and ground to a deep yellow powder. It has been central to Indian cooking and Ayurvedic practice for thousands of years, and is the ingredient that gives curry its colour.
Its best-known compound is curcumin, which is what most of the research interest has focused on.
The black pepper point
This is the one thing worth knowing before you start taking turmeric.
Curcumin on its own is poorly absorbed — most of it passes through without being taken up. Piperine, the compound that makes black pepper sharp, substantially improves that absorption. Fat helps too.
In practice: add a grind of black pepper and cook it in oil, ghee or coconut milk. Traditional Indian cooking does all three without thinking about it, which is probably not a coincidence.
How to use it
- Golden milk. Half a teaspoon in warm milk with black pepper, cinnamon and honey.
- Curries and stews. A teaspoon in with the onions, cooked in oil.
- Rice and roast vegetables. A pinch for colour and earthiness.
- Morning drink. Half a teaspoon in warm water with lemon, pepper and honey.
Practical notes
Turmeric stains — hands, cloths, light worktops and plastic containers. Wipe spills quickly and use a glass or steel container if you decant it.
Store the pack sealed, cool and out of direct sunlight. A 100g pack lasts roughly a month at a teaspoon a day.

Piperine in black pepper significantly improves curcumin absorption. Without it, most passes through unused.
Is this the same as a curcumin supplement?
No. This is whole ground turmeric root — a food. Curcumin capsules are a concentrated extract. Whole turmeric is cheaper and more versatile; extracts deliver a higher dose.
